General Objectives of online course for students


  1. To help adult learners gain confidence in their ability to speak English fluently and accurately.
  2. To enable adults to engage in conversations about everyday topics and specialized professions.
  3. To help learners improve their English pronunciation.

How students make use of the different components


Each situation is divided into 2 parts: Part A - Listen and Speak & Part B- Read and Write. Situations are divided into SCREENS as follows:


Listen and Speak AIMS

• To develop vocabulary used in everyday situations

• To reinforce listening and speaking skills

• To improve pronunciation skills

SCREENS CONTENT / METHOD
SLIDESHOW Focuses on an appropriate context that uses the target vocabulary and grammar in a meaningful way. Click on the Text Off button and the user sees pictures and listens to the sound track. Click on the Text On button and the user listens to the text and sees it highlighted. User can click on individual words to hear them and get a translation. An auto play button allows a straight run-through of the slide show. In addition, the user can click on any one picture to hear that screen.
WORDS The WORDS screens introduce and reinforce vocabulary, the user listens to a word or an expression, sees its translation and records the word. The program scores the user’s performance and offers Pronunciation Training when necessary. The user can add words to his/ her Personal Wordlist and print a mini-dictionary. A pop-up screen offers three types of randomly generated vocabulary practice activities.
DIALOGUES There are two DIALOGUE screens in each situation. The user listens to the text, sees it highlighted and can see optional translations. The user chooses a character and records the text. The program identifies pronunciation issues and offers corrective training. In playback mode, the user can hear him/herself in the dialogue,
CHECK Listening skills are practiced with particular attention paid to purposeful listening. A variety of exercises are provided to develop such skills as listening for the gist, listening for details and specific information, and inferring meaning from context. Types of listening activities include:

• Listen and click on the sentence you hear.

• Listen and complete the dialogue.

• Listen and complete a chart.

• Listen and choose the correct answer, ad, object, picture etc.

MORE WORDS Contains up to 10 additional words that expand the vocabulary relevant to that situation.
Read and Write AIMS

• To provide communicative grammar activities that focus on meaning

• To help the learner develop spelling skills

• To provide adult learners with reading skills, strategies and tools that enable them to read a variety of reading genre as independent readers

SCREENS CONTENT / METHOD
GRAMMAR There are 2 GRAMMAR screens in each situation. They offer various exercise types which practice the language structures covered in the situation. A Grammar Pop-up screen, offers grammar explanations. Key points of each explanation can be seen in mother tongue.
SPELLING Spelling is offered in a number of formats and at varying levels of difficulty. The program corrects and keeps track of spelling problems. Using the WORDLIST feature, the user can request additional focused practice for just the words the program has identified as problematic.
READING Short texts are provided that reinforce the themes and language presented in the situation. Learners are exposed to a variety of reading genre such as ads, articles, invitations, letters, e-mail etc. The READING screen allows the user to listen to a text and see it highlighted. Translations are available. A pop-up screen offers a variety of comprehension questions to develop such reading skills as reading for specific information, reading for gist and reading for the main idea.

Instructions, descriptions and explanations are written in local language on each screen.


Each MODULE ends with a Review Situation as follows:


Review Each module ends with a Review situation that provides task based activities to consolidate the material taught in that module.
SCREENS CONTENT / METHOD
TASKS The two task screens are designed to reinforce listening and reading comprehension skills. Students listen to the soundtrack and answer questions based on various text types. The program corrects any errors. The user can click on any mistakes to see the correct answer and hear the segment of the soundtrack containing the correct answer.
CREATE CREATE develops listening and reading skills. The user creates a slideshow by selecting the appropriate soundtrack and text for each picture. The program corrects mistakes. When the final screen is completed, the user can play the slideshow.
CHAT The CHAT feature offers guided writing practice. The user completes a line of the chat based on the information provided. The program scores the user and indicates errors.
GAMES Crosswords, quizzes, word searches and memory games help practice and reinforce vocabulary. The program randomly generates games based on the vocabulary of each situation. A new game is created each time the user enters.

In the Specialized Courses, each course is divided into MODULES. Each MODULE is divided into SITUATIONS, Each SITUATION is divided into SCREENS.
