Methodology: How the learning process is developed

An Eclectic Approach

In order to cater to different learning styles, our courses have adopted a blended and eclectic approach to language learning. Each situation, while focusing on spoken English, is supported by activities to help the user understand and practice the spoken texts. The best elements of the audio lingual, communicative, functional, whole language, and grammar-translation, are used throughout each course. The use of dialogues, listening and recording activities, translation options, grammar practice, and extended readings, are all contextualized in each course.

Speech Trainer

The Swansea Speech Trainer adapts to each individual user’s speech patterns, identifies pronunciation errors and offers corrective articulation feedback. The program constantly monitors the user’s speech and identifies sounds which are problematic for the user. A wide range of pronunciation activities corrects articulation problems through training animations and a variety of exercises which teach the user to discriminate problematic sounds.

Compare: This screen indicates the specific phoneme the user is mispronouncing in each word and allows the user to compare him/herself to the trainer.

Watch: This screen features an animation which illustrates the articulation mistake and shows the user how to correct it. The soundtrack is subtitled in mother tongue

Listen: On this screen, the user is presented with words which sound similar but have different meanings. This exercise develops the user’s ability to discriminate between easily confused sounds.

Listen: In this sound discrimination exercise, the user listens to words containing easily-confused phonemes and decides which sound group they belong to.

Listen: In this exercise, the user differentiates between words which include the problematic sound and those which do not.
